Mary R. Mounts, School Superintendent
Mary Ruth “Mamie” Mounts was born on November 26, 1907 in Hillsboro, Ohio. She was the daughter of Hollis Grant Mounts and Mary Agnes Nickeson Mounts. Mounts earned her master’s degree in education from the University of Pittsburg. She was the former dean of girls at Tiltonsville High School in Jefferson County, Ohio, when she joined the teaching staff at the Bratenahl School in 1955. The following year, she became the fifth Superintendent and Principal of the Bratenahl School upon the retirement of Marjorie Warburton Thoburn. She served as Superintendent for twelve years, from 1956 to 1968.
In 1995, Mounts wrote a letter to the Bratenahl Historical Society which was published in the BHS’ Gold and Blue Newsletter. Click here to read her letter.
Mary R. Mounts died on November 9, 2004 in Franklin County, Ohio at the age of 96. She is buried at the Alton Cemetery in Alton, Ohio. On her gravestone is memorialized “Beloved Aunt, Educator and Benefactor.”
