Henry Sheffield invested widely, often in local companies. Sheffield was appointed to serve the remaining term of Benjamin Bole, who resigned in 1917. He served for 18 years until 1935.
He was secretary of the Red Cross Cleveland Chapter, secretary of the Cleveland War Council, trustee of Lakeside Hospital, president of Cleveland Associated Charities.
Henry Earl Sheffield was born in Cleveland on December 20, 1883, the only son to Charles and Laura Sheffield, who lived at 1103 Prospect Avenue in Cleveland. Henry’s father died on July 26, 1895, at the age of 49. Eleven-year-old Henry and his mother continued to reside on Prospect until completion of the Bratenahl home.
Henry was the grandson of James Earl Sheffield, benefactor of the Sheffield Science School of Yale University. He was educated at University School, earned an A.B. degree from Yale in 1907, and went on to Harvard Law School, graduating in 1910.
He was a member of Alpha Delta Phi fraternity and members of The Country, Hunt, Kirtland Country, Mid-Day, Rowfant, and Union clubs plus the University Club of New York.
Henry’s mother died on July 21, 1951, at the age of 98. Henry died on January 11, 1978, in Santa Barbara, California, at the age of 94.
