George Dunn - Senior V. P. and General Counsel of Sohio

George joined Standard Oil of Ohio (Sohio) in 1968 as one of the original members of its in-house legal department. He was named Sohio’s senior vice-president and general counsel in 1974. He was a significant factor in the merger of Sohio with British Petroleum in 1968. He retired from BP after 30 years.

Following retirement, he found more time to enjoy sailing. More than half of the next ten years were spent sailing their 54-foot boat twice across the Atlantic, along the European coast and to the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, Venezuela, and the west coast of Mexico.

George Johnson Dunn was born on April 29, 1935, to Gordon and Helen Dunn. He is the brother of Bruce Dunn. They both grew up at 13421 Lake Shore Boulevard. George attended the Bratenahl School, University School, Yale University, and earned his law degree at Harvard University.

George married Rebecca Dobbin Fisher in 1962, who graduated from Randolph Macon College in 1959. They had two sons, John and Gordon.

Dunn was a past trustee of the Cleveland Orchestra, Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland Institute of Music, Cleveland Institute of Art, Council of World Affairs, and the Great Lakes Science Center. He was a trustee and president of the board of WCPN public radio.

George and Becky were collectors of contemporary art and members of several international wine groups.

George died on February 17, 2008, at University Hospitals due to complications from leukemia and was buried at Lake View Cemetery.
