{"id":8100,"date":"2022-10-14T15:12:44","date_gmt":"2022-10-14T19:12:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bratenahlhistorical.org\/?page_id=8100"},"modified":"2025-05-22T13:12:34","modified_gmt":"2025-05-22T17:12:34","slug":"francis-silver-copy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/bratenahlhistorical.org\/index.php\/francis-silver-copy\/","title":{"rendered":"David and Nancy Gottschalt"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1>\n\t\t\tPeople\t<\/h1>\n<h2>\n\t\t\tResidents\t<\/h2>\n<h3>\n\t\t\tDavid and Nancy Gottschalt\t<\/h3>\n<h5>\n\t\t\t10118 Burton Avenue\t<\/h5>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bratenahlhistorical.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Gottschalt-David-e1599143608535.jpg\" alt=\"David Gottschalt\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"285\" width=\"180\" title=\"Gottschalt, David\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading='lazy' \/>\n\t\tDavid Gottschalt\n\t<p>David Franklin Gottschalt was a third-generation resident of Bratenahl where he lived all his life except for the time he served in the Merchant Marine during World War II.\u00a0 His father, <a href=\"https:\/\/bratenahlhistorical.org\/index.php\/frank-gottschalt\/\"><strong>Frank Gottschalt<\/strong><\/a>, was a policeman in the village for over 50 years, having been inducted into the force in 1908 by Bratenahl&#8217;s first Mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/bratenahlhistorical.org\/index.php\/liberty-and-delia-holden\/\"><strong>Liberty Holden<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 David&#8217;s grandfather <a href=\"https:\/\/bratenahlhistorical.org\/index.php\/christian-gottschalt\/\"><strong>Christian Gottschalt<\/strong><\/a> served on Bratenahl&#8217;s City Council during its early years.<\/p>\n<p>David was born on August 5, 1923, to Frank H. Gottschalt and the former Martha Decker.\u00a0 He was a descendant of Mayflower arrivals and Revolutionary War participants.\u00a0 \u00a0His great-great-great grandparents were early settlers of Brooklyn.\u00a0 He grew up on Foster Avenue and attended the Bratenahl School. After the war he worked at National City Bank until his retirement in 1989.<\/p>\n<p>David married the former Nancy Schwelgin on September 7, 1957, and they raised three children.\u00a0 Nancy was born on July 31, 1935, in Cleveland and grew up in Hinkley.\u00a0 When she married David, Nancy moved to Bratenahl where she spent the rest of her life.<\/p>\n\t<p>David was President of the Bratenahl School Athletic Boosters as well as Scoutmaster of Troop 301 during the 1970&#8217;s.\u00a0 In 1990, he helped establish the Bratenahl Historical Society with Nancy and served as its first President.<\/p>\n<p>David&#8217;s hobby was researching American history and the wars that his ancestors fought in from the French and Indian War in the mid-1700s through the recent War in the Persian Gulf.\u00a0 He studied America&#8217;s flags and he made and displayed many of his flags during public ceremonies.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bratenahlhistorical.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Nancy-Gottschalt-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"Nancy Gottschalt \" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"300\" width=\"224\" title=\"Nancy Gottschalt\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading='lazy' \/>\n\t\tNancy Gottschalt \n\t<p>Nancy was active in her community, serving during several terms on the PTA board, and she was active with the Bratenahl Schools athletic booster club. \u00a0She served on the board of the Bratenahl Historical Society for many years.\u00a0 \u00a0In later years, she drove for Meals on Wheels and was active in the Red Hat Society.<\/p>\n<p>David died on September 22, 1996, at the Hospice of the Western Reserve at the age of 73.\u00a0 He is buried at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.\u00a0 Nancy died on January 12, 2022, at the age of 86.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/bratenahlhistorical.org\/index.php\/people\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBack to People\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/bratenahlhistorical.org\/index.php\/residents-list\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tResidents List\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>People Residents David and Nancy Gottschalt 10118 Burton Avenue David Gottschalt David Franklin Gottschalt was a third-generation resident of Bratenahl where he lived all his life except for the time he served in the Merchant Marine during World War II.\u00a0 His father, Frank Gottschalt, was a policeman in the village for over 50 years, having&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_exactmetrics_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-8100","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
