{"id":5568,"date":"2020-09-02T13:39:13","date_gmt":"2020-09-02T17:39:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bratenahlhistorical.org\/?page_id=5568"},"modified":"2020-09-02T13:39:13","modified_gmt":"2020-09-02T17:39:13","slug":"recollections-of-steven-scott-smith","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/bratenahlhistorical.org\/index.php\/recollections-of-steven-scott-smith\/","title":{"rendered":"Recollections of Steven Scott Smith"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>\n\t\tSchools\n\t<\/h1>\n<h2>\n\t\tRecollections\n\t<\/h2>\n<h3>\n\t\tRecollections of Steven Scott Smith\n\t<\/h3>\n<h4>\n\t\t5th Grade Class of 1961\n\t<\/h4>\n\t<p>\u201cMemorable Moments\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I attended Bratenahl School from kindergarten through the fifth grade and left with an indescribable sense of loss and sadness before adjusting to a much different life in Willoughby and then Mentor. \u00a0Looking back, it was just like attending a private academy in a small English village \u2013 that tree-shaded, green-tinted, forsythia, highlighted hamlet by the lake.<\/p>\n<p>Looking back, I have many memories of the mid-50s and early 60s:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The Bratenahl School:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The large toy trucks in Mrs. Burger\u2019s kindergarten. I ran one into a table and knocked off a table leg. The turquoise tea set.<\/li>\n<li>Finger painting.<\/li>\n<li>The little milk cartons in kindergarten.<\/li>\n<li>The kindergarten playground monkey bars. Billy Roediger [8<sup>th<\/sup> Grade Class of 1965], Bobby Zab [8<sup>th<\/sup> Grade Class of 1965], and I played rocket ship there in 1956 and 1957.<\/li>\n<li>Halloween 1957 \u2013 two people came as the \u201cdancing cigarette packs\u201d of a 1950\u2019s commercial. Someone may have been dressed as a sputnik.<\/li>\n<li>Miss Warden&#8217;s giant-sized copy of &#8220;On Cherry Street,&#8221; which was on an easel. Or was this in Mrs. Arnold&#8217;s Second Grade?<\/li>\n<li>Bus driver, Tony Misch, would put trouble-makers off the bus, and the police would drive them home.<\/li>\n<li>If you misbehave during the bus ride to school, you got \u201csent up\u201d to Miss [Mary] Mounts.<\/li>\n<li>The 1956 Christmas program. We, kindergarteners, skipped around the stage in new shirts with ties and dresses.<\/li>\n<li>Miss Urshel\u2019s fourth grade had a Thanksgiving play each year, with Captain John Smith, Indian Massasoit, and 40 offstage warriors.<\/li>\n<li>Summer school \u2013 Library Day.<\/li>\n<li>Playing the \u201cFarmer in the Dell\u201d with Mrs. [Dorothy] Burger\u2019s kindergarten class in the gym.<\/li>\n<li>Digby swinging his whistle in fifth-grade boys&#8217; gym class.<\/li>\n<li>School open houses. It was so unusual to see the school at night when it was dark outside.<\/li>\n<li>In the early 1960s \u2013 Saturday movies were shown in the school auditorium\/gym.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cJohnny Appleseed\u201d the spring school play.<\/li>\n<li>Miss Barr&#8217;s kiln, to fire our clay items. She liked Henri Matisse, the French painter.<\/li>\n<li>Fanney, the school doctor.<\/li>\n<li>Music teacher, Mr. James Savage, and his sedan with real wood trim. When he left to go to a new music school, he was succeeded by Miss Jacobs (?), who drove a black Volkswagen Karman-Ghia sports car.<\/li>\n<li>[Dorothy] Burger\u2019s 1956 violet and white Ford Crown Victoria.<\/li>\n<li>Bank day \u2013 Society National Bank sponsored this. Students acted as tellers. One day per week in, I think, Mr. Neely\u2019s room.<\/li>\n<li>Miss [Mary] Mounts teaching us Geography. I remember studying Malaya and the fruit \u201cMangosteens.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Spelling bees in the fourth grade with Miss Urshel.<\/li>\n<li>Flashcards for arithmetic in fourth grade.<\/li>\n<li>The annual year-end school picnic in the park.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Growing up in Bratenahl:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Village officials brought Santa through the village in a green dump truck, taking a goodies bag to every child.<\/li>\n<li>Every child received a long rubber sword at Chris McFarland&#8217;s birthday party about 1958. That was probably not too popular with parents. Chris was good friends with Brian Macke [8<sup>th<\/sup> Grade Class of 1965].<\/li>\n<li>The annual Cub Scout Circus in the park. Monthly meetings in the gym.<\/li>\n<li>A 1960 (?) chartered bus trip to \u201cThe Blue Hole\u201d with the cub scouts.<\/li>\n<li>In 1958 and 1959, the sad sound of power saws throughout the village because of Dutch Elm Disease.<\/li>\n<li>Summer day camp at the playground.<\/li>\n<li>At 140<sup>th<\/sup> Street and Lake Shore Boulevard, there was a Mobil gas station with a towering neon &#8220;Flying Red Horse&#8221; with moving red neon wings.<\/li>\n<li>The Lakeshore Country Club with its golf course, swimming pool, and cabanas.<\/li>\n<li>The Wellman&#8217;s vintage gray Rolls Royce was often parked on 105<sup>th<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>The Eagle Supermarket, barbershop, and toy store on 140<sup>th<\/sup> (Taken out for the freeway). The newer Lawson\u2019s store on East 140<sup>th<\/sup> Street.<\/li>\n<li>The Persell girls, Bonnie [8h Grade Class of 1955] and Peggy [8<sup>th<\/sup> Grade Class of 1959], babysat for me and my brothers, Dan and Ted. Once, Bonnie took us downtown, in the evening, on the bus to the Palace Theater to see &#8220;101 Dalmatians.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Sled riding on hills by Liberty Boulevard.<\/li>\n<li>Dining at Maharis\u2019 Restaurant, off Liberty Boulevard, and the Black Angus Steakhouse.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>[Steven Scott Smith was born on May 18, 1951 to Robert and Elizabeth Smith.\u00a0 While attending the Bratenahl School, Steven lived at 13401 Lake Shore Boulevard.
