{"id":5516,"date":"2020-08-27T09:53:30","date_gmt":"2020-08-27T13:53:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bratenahlhistorical.org\/?page_id=5516"},"modified":"2020-09-15T15:18:03","modified_gmt":"2020-09-15T19:18:03","slug":"recollections-of-sarah-sally-andrews-raitt","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/bratenahlhistorical.org\/index.php\/recollections-of-sarah-sally-andrews-raitt\/","title":{"rendered":"Recollections of Sarah &#8220;Sally&#8221; Andrews (Raitt)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>\n\t\tSchools\n\t<\/h1>\n<h2>\n\t\tRecollections\n\t<\/h2>\n<h3>\n\t\tRecollections of Sarah &#8220;Sally&#8221; Andrews (Raitt)\n\t<\/h3>\n<h4>\n\t\t8th Grade Class of 1936\n\t<\/h4>\n\t<p>At the age of 3-1\/2, I got off the train at the 105<sup>th<\/sup> Street Railroad Station with my mother and sister, having crossed the Atlantic from Glasgow, Scotland to start a new life in America.\u00a0 We were met at the station by my father and brother, Alex, who had come out a year ahead of us to get established in work and have a house for us to come to.\u00a0 The house was located at the top of Foster Hill [10221 Foster Avenue], so when we got of the train, we had only to cross the street and we were home.<\/p>\n<p>There weren\u2019t any young children my age to play with, but I had a dear friend Bessie Robertson Salim who let me join in the fun activities with her and friends who were several years older.<\/p>\n<p>One incident stood out when several of us were sledding down Burton hill and were confronted by a Bratenahl policeman.\u00a0 He escorted us to the police station where we were reprimanded for sledding down the hill and on to the road.\u00a0 After we were dismissed, I remember running up Foster hill crying all the way. When I got home, I told my mother that I had been in jail.\u00a0 I was probably about 4 or 5 years old.<\/p>\n<p>When I was 5, my family moved to Cleveland.\u00a0 My brother was working for the Charles Irish Company.\u00a0 I attended Oliver Wendell Holmes School for six years.\u00a0 When I left 6<sup>th<\/sup> grade, my family moved back to the same house we lived in before.\u00a0 My brother was now married and soon joined the Bratenahl Police Force.<\/p>\n<p>It was a real challenge enrolling in the Bratenahl School for seventh grade as the Cleveland school was a year behind academically.\u00a0 It was a big adjustment transferring from a class of 40 students to one of 7 students.\u00a0 In order to avoid being put back a year, <a href=\"https:\/\/bratenahlhistorical.org\/index.php\/sara-a-bair\/\">Miss [Sara] Bair<\/a> agreed to let me stay in the 7<sup>th<\/sup> grade, provided I would keep up with all the extra homework I would be getting.\u00a0 The 8<sup>th<\/sup> grade was much easier and provided a bonus for those of us that went on to Kirk Junior High School, which was a repeat of Bratenahl\u2019s 8<sup>th<\/sup> grade.<\/p>\n<p>I married a Scot, Bill Raitt, who for many years was manager of the Cleveland Kiltie Pipe Band.<\/p>\n<p><em>[Sarah \u201cSally\u201d Dewer Andrews Raitt was born in Scotland on December 31, 1921 to Ringland and Sarah Andrews.
