George had a deep affection for and knowledge of Bratenahl and was a walking encyclopedia of local historical information.<\/p>\n<p>When he was growing up in his stately Bratenahl home, George used to ride horseback through the village nearly every day. He spent much of his adult life trying to keep Bratenahl as it was when he was growing up: quiet, upscale, and residential.<\/p>\n\t<p>His concern for preserving Bratenahl&#8217;s residential character caused him to help found and become president of the Bratenahl Community Foundation. He was also chairman of the Bratenahl Land Conservancy, which discouraged developers who might be tempted to fill every empty plot with new housing.<\/p>\n<p>In 2001, George ran an unsuccessful campaign for village mayor, citing his desire to preserve open spaces and his opposition to new construction.<\/p>\n<p>George Carrothers Landis was born on August 14, 1931, to Laird and Lotus Landis. The Landis family moved to Bratenahl in 1945.<\/p>\n<p>George graduated from Shaw High School, followed by a Bachelor of Arts from John Carroll University and a Law degree from Western Reserve University. He worked briefly at Dunn &amp; Bradstreet before joining Penton Publishing Company, where he became a director and general counsel. He purchased Brightwood at <a href=\"https:\/\/bratenahlhistorical.org\/index.php\/9534-lake-shore-blvd\/\">9534 Lake Shore Boulevard<\/a> on February 16, 1978.<\/p>\n<p>George died at the Cleveland Clinic on January 26, 2003, after multiple complications following surgery for cancer.
