The houses were to have clustered courtyards and a quaint feeling. Some of the parcels were located on a ridge overlooking Nine Mile Brook.

John Senhauser Architects of Cincinnati, Ohio, who specialized in custom single-family and multi-family homes throughout Ohio designed Mather homes. Plans were to include a grouping of fourteen clustered and free-standing detached cottage club side homes, all shingle architecture.

Plans called for residences to be arranged in a village-like environment. Sizes ranged from 2,600 to 2,900 square feet and could be modified to create more substantial dwellings. The designs of these homes provided the buyer with a variety of plans with individuality obtained from the placement and layout of such amenities as bay windows, volume ceilings, and screened porches. The exterior plans of each Mather home contained individualized treatment while working with a universal language of massing. Lush landscaping with pockets of large trees reinforces the feeling of the Mather’s village settings. A majority of the six available floor plans were to offer first-floor master suites as part of the two-story design.

Construction of Mather Homes was done by Williamsburg Homes Inc. of Chesterland, Ohio, starting in the fall of 1990 and scheduled for spring 1991 occupancy. By January 1991, ten homes were sold and the first ready for occupancy in March 1991. By the summer of 1991, Mather was projected to be a complete sellout.

       Back to Places

       Developments List

Places Developments Mather Homes Newport Development Mather Homes of Newport The Mather residential zone of Newport Development was named for Samuel Mather and was situated on a portion of the historic Samuel Mather estate, located east of the Bingham zone and wrapped around so that some of the homes faced the boulevard.
